Six people, including two children, have been rescued after their boat capsized near Cape Direction in Tasmania’s south-east this morning.

The group activated a distress beacon shortly before 8:30am on Friday after their 6-metre vessel overturned.

They managed to swim to shore at Fort Direction before emergency services arrived.

Inspector Nikala Parsons said marine police aboard Dauntless responded to the incident, along with officers on land.

“Thankfully, the group managed to reach the shore at Fort Direction after their 6-metre Edencraft vessel capsized,” she said.

“They are now safe and warm.”

Police believe a mechanical failure caused the boat to capsize.

The vessel remains in the water and cannot be retrieved today. Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) has been notified.

With summer now underway, police are urging boaties to prioritise safety on the water.

Authorities recommend checking weather forecasts and tides before heading out and ensuring vessels are seaworthy and not overloaded.

Boaters should carry all required safety equipment, including an anchor, flares, EPIRB, VHF radio and first aid kit.

Those heading out alone should tell someone their plan and expected return time.
