An aircraft has spent over an hour circling Burnie Airport in Tasmania’s north-west after its landing gear reportedly failed.
A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the airport in Wynyard just after 11am on Friday.
They said reports were received that the single occupant of the plane may have difficulty landing due to a “potential mechanical issue”.
It is understood landing gear lights on the aircraft are indicating that the gear is not down, however visual checks suggest otherwise.
The plane, an Alpi Pioneer 300, will attempt to land on the grass beside the runway when ready after buring off fuel.
Firefighters are standing by at the airport to assist with the landing, which is not expected to happen for some time yet.
The airport has enacted its emergency plan, with members of the public asked to avoid the area.
Updated 12:30pm, Friday January 10: The small plane touched down safely moments ago.
Police said the pilot, who was the only person onboard the aircraft, was not physically injured.
“The airport has resumed normal operations,” police said.
