Police arrest woman accused of stealing car and crashing in Launceston city centre

A woman is in police custody after allegedly stealing a car and driving dangerously through Launceston’s CBD this afternoon.

Police said officers were called to Wellington Street about 2:10pm after reports a woman had stolen a vehicle.

Witnesses said the car was driven erratically down Charles Street and swerving across lanes “like a maniac”.

It later crashed near the Frederick Street intersection, police said.

“Police cars coming from all directions,” one witness said on social media as the incident unfolded.

After the crash, the woman allegedly tried to flee on foot but was arrested nearby a short time later.

Police said no one was injured in the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward.
