The Tasmanian government has rejected the idea of sealing a road corridor between Copping and Orford, citing a feasibility study that found it would not be cost-effective for Tasmanians.
Sparked by the partial closure of the Tasman Hwy at Paradise Gorge due to a rockfall in May 2021, the study suggested an eye-watering figure to seal the dirt Wielangta Road.
State Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said State Growth engaged local firm Pitt & Sherry to undertake an options analysis and concept design for the sealing of Wielangta Road.
“Pitt & Sherry’s advice has now been received and has found that sealing of the full length of the road would cost an estimated $91.4 million, which would not represent value for money for Tasmanians,” Minister Ferguson explained.

The feasibility report also suggested an option that would deliver an alternative transport route to the Tasman Highway, should there be future disruptions through Paradise Gorge.
According to Pitt & Sherry, by sealing approximately 7 kilometres in the middle sections of Wielangta Road and replacing the Griffiths Rivulet Bridge and the Seventeen Acre Creek Bridge, a route that is suitable for use in the event of a closure or major disruptions on the Tasman Highway could potentially be provided.

Ferguson said this solution would cost $32.1 million, which they are prepared to consider in future.
“Any option would need a significant contribution from the Australian Government, consistent with the 80/20 funding ratio for regional roads.”
The Glamorgan-Spring Bay Council say they are eager for improved all-weather access to the East Coast.
