A cleanup is currently underway in St Helens following a storm that brought 145mm of rain to the east coast.
The Anchor Wheel Motel on Tully Street was among the hardest-hit businesses on Wednesday, with nearly 3-4 inches of flooding affecting close to a dozen units.
The heavy rain inundated the motel, prompting owners to close indefinitely and cancel weeks worth of bookings.
“Apologies to our guests … [we] suffered flooding due to the extraordinary storm event today,” the motel said on Wednesday.
“Insurance assessors arrive tomorrow with clean up crew. We are notifying guests with a booking and will discuss further then.”
The said they don’t know how long they’ll be out of business for.
“See you on the other side,” they said.
Several homes and businesses were flooded in the weather event, which knocked out power to much of the town and closed main highways.
