Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has claimed victory in the Hobart seat of Clark, cementing his position as one of Australia’s most successful independent politicians.

With 48.8% of ballots counted, Wilkie has secured 17,282 votes ahead of Labor’s Heidi Heck with 7,104 votes.

While voting earlier today, Wilkie said one of the first items on his agenda would be securing a BBQ for the Glenorchy Primary School.

“I think that will make that a priority. It’s the biggest polling booth in the electorate and I can’t get a democracy sausage,” he said.

Wilkie has held the seat, first called Denison, since 2010.
