A new multi-storey development is set to reshape Taroona’s skyline, with plans for new apartments, retail spaces and a food outlet on the Channel Highway approved.

The three-storey building, which will stand at 12-metres tall, will be located adjacent to the Taroona Shopping Centre and feature 18 new apartments, retail spaces and a food outlet.

Despite receiving 15 objections from residents concerned about the building height, traffic, overshadowing and the lack of a broader precinct plan, the Kingborough Council approved the plans on Monday evening.

Acting Mayor Clare Glade-Wright said Taroona’s local business zone is “really in need of a bit of a refresh”.

“I really like the look of this development. It looks really lovely. I’m really impressed with the design,” she said.

Councillor Flora Fox shared in concerns from residents that the building was ‘bulky’ and could set a precedent, potentially transforming Taroona “from a village into what is almost a cityscape”.

“I’m also concerned about the width of the footpath which … is a suitable width for residential but not necessarily, if it’s 1.2m wide, … adequate for commercial or shopping environments.”

Fox attempted to amend the plans so the building would sit further from the boundary, which split the council but was ultimately defeated.

Councillor Gideon Cordover said it would be “irresponsible” to try and put a stop to the development given the risk of a likely successful appeal.

“I think [we have] to take a glass half full approach on this one, he said.

“This area of our municipality can do with a facelift … In the midst of a housing crisis, I think having a mixed-use building with more places for more families to stay can only be a good thing.”

The approved development will involve the demolition of two existing homes.
