A concrete flood levee wall at Launceston’s Seaport is being transformed by one of Australia’s most celebrated street artists.

Georgia Hill, a Sydney-born artist now based in Paris, has painted a 120-metre mural along Lower Charles Street where it meets the East Tamar Highway.

The work features the phrase: The way you see it, it’s beautiful.

Hill was selected through a public expressions of interest process run by the Launceston City Council last year.

She is known internationally for her striking black and white murals that combine bold typography with textured patterns.

Her work has appeared across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Japan, Iceland, Jordan, India and Indonesia.

Launceston mayor Matthew Garwood said the mural was part of the council’s push to expand street art across the city.

“Over the past eighteen months we’ve really lifted our focus on street art, because we know how much it adds to the feel of the city and how people experience it day to day,” he said.

“Georgia has such an incredible name internationally and this one will definitely make you think and start a conversation.”

The Seaport project comes ahead of Thoroughfare, a new street art festival launching in Launceston in March.

The festival will see murals appear in high-profile spots across the CBD.

“Launnie’s street art scene is on the rise,” Garwood said.

“More creativity, more conversations, less graffiti and more reasons to be proud of our city.”

“We’re attracting artists from around the country, while still backing our own home-grown talent and that balance really matters to us.”
