International seafood buyers from across Asia are getting a firsthand taste of Tasmania’s world-class seafood industry this week as part of a three-day showcase.
Fourteen buyers from Japan, China, Singapore and Vietnam are touring the island state from May 13 to 15, visiting local producers and experiencing Tasmania’s renowned seafood sector.
The initiative forms part of the Tasmanian Government’s Inbound Visitation Program.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the visit provides a unique opportunity for international buyers to connect directly with Tasmanian producers.

“By bringing buyers to Tasmania, we’re giving them the chance to meet the makers, see firsthand where our produce is grown and harvested, and savour the flavours of the finished product,” Rockliff said.
“Our seafood is second to none, and we’re inviting these international buyers to not just taste it, but to experience it like locals – forming connections with our producers and discovering what sets Tasmania apart.”

Local companies including Tasmanian Oyster Co., Candy Abalone, and Salty Roe are hosting the international delegates, offering behind-the-scenes access to their operations.
The timing is particularly strategic following the recent resumption of Australian rock lobster trade with China.
Seafood represents a substantial portion of Tasmania’s food and beverage export market, accounting for more than 46% of exports valued at almost $440 million.
“We know that bringing buyers directly to Tasmania creates tangible economic benefits for our producers and exporters – boosting business confidence and opening the door to new opportunities,” Rockliff said.

Ten Tasmanian companies are participating in the inbound buyer visit, including Huon Aquaculture, Hai Loong Seafood, Tasmanian Blue Seafood, Three Friends Abalone, The Seafood Gateway, Yumbah Aquaculture and 888 Fortune Enterprises.
