Spectacular displays of the southern lights were visible across Tasmania’s south and east coast overnight, despite challenging cloud conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology had warned of a severe geomagnetic storm, creating ideal conditions for the aurora australis to appear.

Photographers managed to capture vivid green and purple colours illuminating the night sky, even with partial cloud coverage obscuring some areas.

These storms happen when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s atmosphere, creating the distinctive coloured glow.

BOM forecasters say conditions remain favourable for another aurora display tonight, offering a second chance for those who missed the show.

Observers wanting to maximise their viewing opportunity should travel to darker locations away from urban areas and face south.
