Tasmania’s stunning beaches are set to be put under the microscope, as the country’s ‘Beach Ambassador’ embarks on a mission to determine the top 10 in Australia.
Despite not being a traditional beach destination, conservationist Brad Farmer believes the island state is well-placed to land in the coveted list.
He said there are currently several local contenders included in Tourism Australia’s annual beach ranking.
“Tasmania has the potential to rival other states given the pristine nature of its beaches, the new cold water therapy movement and that many visitors, including overseas born Australians now travelling, simply don’t swim,” Farmer said.
“The iconic age of a sunburnt country of bronzed Aussies is fading into history and that positions Tasmania well for inbound tourism markets.”
This week, Farmer will evaluate select regions of the coast from land, sea and drone.
“Tassie might be at the bottom of the world but could see itself enjoying the top position among national and international audiences,” he said.
Tasmania has never claimed the top spot on the national list, despite having 1,617 beaches.
In the most recent rankings ‘Best Beaches’ ranking, Cockle Creek in the state’s far south placed third.
