Beachgoers are being urged to be mindful of eagle nests as shorebirds begin nesting and breeding on Tasmanian beaches.

Parks and Wildlife say that while the shorebirds and their eggs can be difficult to spot due to their camouflage on dry sand, their habits need to be protected, as they can only live, breed and survive on beaches.

Eggs are laid in shallow nests called scrapes and newly hatched chicks are unable to fly for up to a month until they grow their flight feathers.

To protect the shorebirds and their habitat, beachgoers are encouraged to follow simple practices such as observing shorebird signage, checking the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service website for information on dog exercise areas and respecting nesting sites.

The PWS will be working with local councils and volunteer groups to raise awareness and support local communities in protecting sensitive areas.
