Swimmers are being told to stay away from Bellerive Beach East due to elevated bacteria levels in the water.

The Clarence City Council says the unsafe results detected during recent water sampling are likely caused by wet weather and stormwater runoff into the River Derwent.

“This means that swimming is not recommended at this section of the beach until further notice,” the council said.

“During summer, water sampling is done every week and we will provide an update when this improves on our website.”

The beach remains open for other activities like walking and sunbathing.

Signage will change once water quality levels return to swimmable levels.

The closure comes as temperatures are forecast to reach 32 degrees in Hobart in the coming days.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the capital can expect 21 degrees on Saturday, 24 degrees on Sunday and a hot Monday with 32 degrees.
