A ‘massive’ rent hike has forced one of Hobart’s longest-standing coffee shops to close its doors.

The Stagg, formerly known as Atlas Espresso, has been serving CBD customers for the past 15 years on the corner of Macquarie and Elizabeth Streets.

In a social media post, owners Jonathan and Sue Stagg broke the news to their loyal fans that, after “many months of difficult and stressful negotiations”, they would be vacating their CBD store.

“On 10th November, our landlord gave us 30 days to vacate. We will close our doors for the last time on Friday 8th December,” they wrote.

“This was not our decision. We love being here and wanted to stay.”

The couple has expressed their “deep gratitude” for the support they’ve received over their 15 years of operation, with hundreds of heartfelt messages pouring in on their social media pages.

“Our cafe has always been more than just a business, it is a family, and we will truly miss being a part of this vibrant area”.

The Stagg’s second location, located in Hobart’s ‘Midtown’ at 138 Elizabeth Street, will remain open.

The pair purchased the Midtown store in 2022 and intend to relocate iconic items from their city store to Midtown when they close on December 8.

The closure joins the growing list of business that have shut up shop for similar reasons in recent months, including the Macquarie Street Foodstore and Jackman and McRoss bakery.
