Beloved Tasmanian musician Tony Voglino loses battle to cancer

Tony Voglino, a Tasmanian music icon known for his infectious passion for entertaining, has passed away after a battle with cancer.

Voglino, who had been performing for over four decades, was a regular fixture at pubs, clubs, concerts and festivals across the state.

He began his career after moving to Sydney at the age of 19, playing pub rock and touring the country.

Voglino’s success in the Australian music industry included three original singles charting with Festival Records, supporting various national and international performers and receiving a gold record for his contribution to the ‘Starstruck’ movie soundtrack.

He also appeared in two national television commercials for 7-Eleven and Liquid Paper alongside Michael Nesmith from The Monkees.

Upon returning to Tasmania, Voglino became a member of the legendary band Oz Lingo and continued to perform solo, supporting acts like Status Quo, Suzi Quatro and Bay City Rollers.

In recent years, Voglino could be found entertaining audiences at various venues throughout the state nearly every weekend.

Tributes have poured in for the musician, with many describing him as a “true legend” and a “Tasmanian icon”.

“One of the great honours of my life was to share the stage with you Tony Voglino and also the many hours of chats my dear friend,” one friend wrote.

“You can rest now, no longer in pain. I will always hold you in my arms.”
