A Tasmanian Short-Beaked Echidna has celebrated a significant milestone one year on from his remarkable rescue.

Named Tamagotchi or ‘Tama’ for short, the Echidna has ‘captured the hearts’ of both staff and visitors at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.

Tama was bought to the sanctuary in August last year after he was hit by a car in Northern Tasmania.

Keepers say Tama underwent treatment at the Bonorong Wildlife Hospital for a broken beak where it was discovered he had cataracts in both eyes.

“Although we can’t be sure how he developed these, it’s likely his blindness was a factor in being hit by a car in the first place,” the Sanctuary wrote online.

“Once his beak was healed it was determined that it would be safest for Tamagotchi to remain at Bonorong as a resident due to his vision impairment, so he can receive ongoing care and monitoring.”

“He quickly formed a friendship with our other resident Echidna Luigi and became a fast favourite with staff and guests alike.”

The sanctuary are inviting people to “get up close with friendly Tama and his buddy Luigi” by booking an Echidna Encounter at bonorong.com.au/animal-encounters
