Tasmania’s Blue Derby mountain bike network generates more than $77 million annually for the state’s economy, according to a new report.

The 2025 Value of Blue Derby to the Tasmanian Economy study reveals the trail network contributes $50.9 million in direct visitor expenditure each year, with an additional $26.6 million in indirect economic benefits.

More than 45,000 mountain bike enthusiasts visited Blue Derby in the past year, representing over 50% of all mountain biking trips taken in Tasmania.

Chair of the Blue Derby Foundation, Steve Howell, said the results show both the success and future challenges for the network.

“The results in this report are testament to the hard work and collaboration between private businesses, regional leaders and local, state and federal governments that have made Derby Australia’s leading mountain-biking destination,” he said.

International visitors deliver the highest economic impact, spending an average of $3,823 per trip, while interstate guests stay nearly nine days and spend $505 per MTB day.

The network currently supports 274 full-time equivalent jobs across hospitality, accommodation, shuttle services, guiding, retail and bike maintenance.

Despite the impressive figures, stakeholders are calling for continued investment to maintain Tasmania’s competitive edge against emerging mainland trail destinations.

“While Blue Derby remains Australia’s most influential mountain biking tourism destination, the report highlights rising competition from mainland trail towns,” Howell said.

The Blue Derby Foundation welcomed the state government’s July election promise of $250,000 towards the Destination Derby Community Master Plan, but said there needs to be ongoing support.

“This masterplan project is pivotal and needs to get cracking, investment of this calibre demands a clear vision for growth and boots on the ground,” Howell said.

The funds were promised to help explore the needs of residents and visitors, while preserving the local character of Derby.
