Tasmania’s blueberry season is in full swing, with fresh, locally grown berries available at local stores, farmers markets and pick your own farms.
After a slightly later start to the season this year, fruit volumes and quality are looking high.
“Tasmania produces some of the best tasting blueberries,” said Sharon Keetch, who runs Tru Blu Berries in the Huon Valley with her brother Damien Clark.
“Our cool temperate climate and slower growing conditions promotes excellent flavour.
“It’s great to be able to provide locally grown fresh berries for the Tasmanian community.”
While New South Wales is the major producer of blueberries nationally, Tasmania is Australia’s second largest production state.
Last season, Tasmanian growers produced approximately 2,200 tonnes of blueberries, contributing around 11% of Australian production.
The majority of production in Tasmania is sold on the domestic market, with only a small volume sold overseas.
“The freshness and flavour of local blueberries is unmatched,” said Fruit Growers Tasmania CEO Peter Cornish.
“By choosing Tasmanian grown blueberries, consumers are not only getting the best produce available but also helping to sustain our local farming community.”
