Activists from the Bob Brown Foundation have camped high up on the cliffs of kunanyi/Mt Wellington’s Organ Pipes, in protest of native forest logging in Tasmania.

They say they’re sending a “loud and clear” message that Tasmania’s forests “need protecting, not logging”.

“Our government still allows the destruction of these forests every single day,” said protester Maraika Smit.

The action comes ahead of Sunday’s nationwide March for Forests, organised by the Bob Brown Foundation.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out across Australia for the event to call for an end to native forest logging, with Hobart’s march beginning at 11am.

The Tasmanian Liberal Party have committed to opening 40,000 hectares of native forests for logging, if they win this state election.

Tasmanian Labor have also agreed to extend native forest logging contracts until at least 2040 if they are elected.

Both parties say they want to provide ‘security and certainty’ for Tasmania’s logging industry employees.

The Greens say the commitments from both parties is “shocking”.
