Motorists will face overnight lane closures on the Brooker Highway at Montrose this week as traffic lights are installed at one of Hobart’s most crash-prone intersections.
The highway will be reduced to single lanes from 7pm to 5am on Wednesday and Thursday nights, with the northern intersection of Duncan Street and Riverway Road closed to all traffic during these hours.
Normal traffic conditions will return by 6:30am each morning to minimise peak-hour delays, State Growth says.
Workers are building a service trench as part of the upgrade, which includes new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at the busy junction.
The intersection has long been a crash hotspot, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times for nearby Montrose Bay High School.

It also services Montrose Bay Foreshore Park and MyState Bank Arena.
“High volumes of traffic entering or exiting the Brooker Highway from Foreshore Road and Duncan Street have to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic on Hobart’s busiest highway,” according to project information.
Work on the broader intersection project began late last month and is expected to finish by April 2026, weather permitting.
Major highway works are being carried out overnight, Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm and 5am. Daytime construction on local streets runs from 7am to 5pm on weekdays.
Once complete, the new traffic lights will be synchronised with other Brooker Highway intersections to keep traffic flowing smoothly, according to State Growth.
