A pedestrian bridge over the Brooker Highway in North Hobart has been closed after an apparent vehicle strike left the structure damaged.
Engineers are set to inspect the bridge near Warwick Street this weekend after it was shut by the Hobart City Council earlier this week.
“… We were informed by an eagle-eyed member of the public of damage caused to the bridge, most likely from an unreported vehicle strike,” the council said.
“We closed the bridge straight away to keep pedestrians safe and we will do a further inspection.”
Engineers will examine the underside of the bridge on Sunday night using a lift positioned on the highway.

The inspection is scheduled to begin at 8pm and is expected to take less than four hours.
Two Glenorchy-bound lanes will be closed during the work, with one lane remaining open to traffic.
Hobart-bound lanes are not expected to be affected unless engineers discover additional damage.
Repairs to the walkway are planned for next week, depending on what the inspection reveals.
The council said the timing could change if weather conditions make the work unsafe.
The bridge, located near the BWS bottle shop, provides an important crossing point for pedestrians navigating the busy highway.
Height clearance warning signs from 5.1 to 5.5 metres are posted at the bridge.
