A Tasmanian artisan cheese producer has won big on the world stage for their “very new concept” type of cheese.
The Bruny Island Cheese Co. was awarded a ‘super gold’ medal and the title of the best Australian cheese for their Raw Milk C2 cheese at the World Cheese Awards held in Norway on Monday night.
The cheese company say raw milk cheese remains a ‘fairly recent’ idea in Australia, with the award winning C2 the cheese “that started it all”.
“Of all the cheeses we make, this is the one we are most proud of. It was the first raw milk cheese in Australia (way back in 2009) and being unpasteurised, is the purest expression of our craft,” the cheese company say.

“C2 is the sort of cheese found throughout the mountains of France and northern Italy. A classic cooked curd cheese made in a traditional large form.”
It takes around for 4 to 8 months for C2 to mature, during which it develops a “sweet aroma and a mildly nutty flavour”.
The 35th World Cheese Awards featured 4,502 entries from 43 countries, with a panel of 264 experts from 38 nations responsible for selecting the winners.
