The Burnie City Council has made the decision to write off more than half a million dollars in unpaid parking fines.
At a closed session of their December meeting last year, the council resolved to clear $590,585 owed for 12,740 fines.
All are more than a decade old and had been deemed uncollectible.
The wiped fined date back to before April 2008, when the Monetary Penalties Enforcement Service took over managing and recovering parking infringements for councils.
The write-off has been anticipated for several years and was included in the council’s financial statements as a doubtful debt provision.
The council still has 25,206 outstanding fines, including 13,809 issued before 2009.
As of December, the total amount owed stood at $1.32 million.
The council said it would soon begin the process of crediting the 12,740 written-off fines.
