Earlier: The Tasmania Fire Service has issued a Watch and Act alert for Ambleside near Devonport as an out-of-control bushfire moves towards the community.

The blaze is travelling directly towards Ambleside and surrounding areas, with authorities warning it will be difficult to control.

Residents face immediate danger from embers, smoke and ash that could reach homes before the main fire arrives. Thick smoke may severely reduce visibility and make breathing difficult.

Fire crews are on scene battling the blaze, but conditions remain unpredictable and are expected to change rapidly.

“Take action now to protect yourself, your family and your home,” Tasmania Fire Service said in the alert.

Residents with existing bushfire plans should review them immediately and decide early whether to evacuate.

“If you are not prepared for a bushfire, be ready to leave for a safer place,” the service warned. “If you stay, your home may not be defendable.”

Authorities recommend staying with family or friends as the safest option, but stressed people should only travel if conditions allow safe passage.
