The popular Overland Track through Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park will remain closed for an additional two weeks.

Parks and Wildlife (PWS) had initially planned to reopen the track on Monday, February 10.

However, shortly before 5pm today, officials announced the extended closure due to ongoing bushfires that have consumed over 16,000 hectares of wilderness.

A new reopening date has now been set for Monday, February 24.

“The Overland Track closure is being extended for two weeks to ensure the fire boundaries are contained and there is certainty of our ability to keep walkers safe,” PWS Incident Controller Nic Deka said.

“Firefighters are dealing with challenging conditions today and these will continue for at least the next week.”

“The closure will enable impact assessments and works that may be necessary to reopen the track.”

Many affected walkers have expressed disappointment but understand the need for the closure.

“Whilst I’m incredibly disappointed my walk is cancelled, it’s more important for everyone to concentrate on saving the wilderness,” one walker shared online.

“That’s our trip gone! Devo. Feel for National parks,” said another.

Anyone who has booked to walk the Overland Track during the closure period will receive a full refund.
