Hobart’s Queens Walk will be closed for the next two months to enable the installation of a new 4.3km sewer pipeline.

The closure will begin on Monday and will bring “temporary traffic disruptions” to the Domain Highway and Cornelian Bay area.

TasWater’s Head of Major Projects Tim Cubit said a number of options were considered to minimise traffic disruptions in planning the pipeline route.

“This alignment was the best option to avoid major arterial roads while still allowing for the safe and efficient installation of this critical infrastructure,” he said.

“We acknowledge that the closure of Queens Walk will cause some frustration for Hobart commuters [who] will be able to get to where they need to go, but it may take a little longer than usual.”

Access to the recreation area and Boathouse restaurant will remain open but detours will be in place.

Additional closures are then planned later this year around Lower Domain Road and McVilly Drive.

“A pipeline of this size requires a great deal of digging and trenching [and] the only way to do that work safely is to close the road,” Cubit said.

Once completed, the pipeline will transport 12 million litres of sewage daily to the upgraded Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant.

It will see the existing Macquarie Point Sewage Treatment Plant decommissioned to make way for the planned Macquarie Point stadium.
