A major intersection in Launceston will be given a multi-million dollar upgrade over the coming months.
The City of Launceston will spend $3 million to transform the junction of Lindsay Street and Tamar Street in Inveresk with a new raised intersection.
The current roundabout will be replaced with traffic lights, a second right turn lane onto the Tamar Street Bridge added and repairs to “failing road infrastructure” along Invermay Road undertaken.
Construction will start next week, with work expected to take around 15 weeks.
Mayor Matthew Garwood said feedback had been received “for a long time” about how the roundabout can be “incredibly difficult” to navigate at peak times.
“Motorists have to run the gauntlet to enter the roundabout, which is not a good situation in terms of safety or efficiency,” he said.
“And despite the Inveresk area being one of the most highly pedestrianised parts of Launceston … there’s no safe pedestrian crossing at the intersection.”
He said the council is working closely with contractors to minimise disruptions.
Access to businesses along Invermay Road will be maintained throughout the project, along with access to the Inveresk precinct and QVMAG.
