Tasmania’s hospitality industry is preparing for its busiest time of year as the state gears up for an influx of holidaymakers.
More than 8% of jobs in the state are supported by the hospitality sector, with many workers going without time off to help others enjoy theirs.
Hospitality and Small Business Minister Jane Howlett said now is a “very important” for operators in all corners of the state.
“Our frontline services in the hospitality sector are critical to showcasing our amazing Tasmanian product,” she said.
“We also know that they’re … taking time away from their family in order to show our visitors such a wonderful experience.”
Howlett acknowledged that the holiday season can be demanding, but stressed that there is no excuse for disrespecting staff.
“It’s an incredibly busy time of year and we just ask that people please be kind to these people who are working,” she said.
“A lot of them are working seven days, seven nights a week to provide a very valuable service for our tourism sector.”
Tasmanian Hospitality Association board member Shelley Verdouw said many staff working these holidays are new to the industry.
“We do ask that you have patience and understanding and encouragement for them,” she said.
