Campers told to leave Bruny Island campground as firefighters battle bushfire

Campers have been told to leave a Bruny Island campground as firefighters work to contain a bushfire burning on the south of the island.

The blaze broke out at Labillardiere Peninsula in South Bruny National Park on Thursday evening, prompting authorities to close key access roads and tourist sites.

Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters were forced to suspend operations overnight due to unsafe conditions.

They returned to the fireground this morning.

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse remains closed to visitors, while Lighthouse Road at Mabel Bay has been shut until further notice.

“Please do not attempt to drive to Cape Bruny as you will get turned around,” Cape Bruny Lighthouse Tours posted online this morning.

Police say Lighthouse Road is closed south of Lunawanna Hall to all non-local residents and closed from Mabel Bay to all motorists.

Authorities have urged anyone who spots fire activity in the area to immediately call Triple Zero (000).
