An allegedly out-of-control car has sparked a power outage that at its peak affected around 1,000 homes in the Ulverstone area.

The vehicle ran over an electrical turret on Ocean Drive and caught fire on Saturday evening.

“We’ve had to cut supply as a safety precaution,” TasNetworks said.

“We’ll restore power as soon as possible.”

Video from the scene shows the vehicle engulfed in flames and rapid explosions heard popping from the wreck.

TasNetworks has since restored power to around 900 customers, with about 100 still disconnected.

They say those people may be off for several more hours and possibly overnight.

“The fuel tank of the car appears to have exploded and the fire service still needs safe, non-electrified access,” they said.

“We’ll seek to SMS any customers who’ll be without power overnight.”
