Woman critical after car crashes through front wall of Morty's Food Court in Launceston CBD

Updated 1:40pm, Wednesday: A woman has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after a ute crashed through the front of a Launceston food court this afternoon.

The incident at Morty’s Food Court on Wellington Street occurred just before 12:30pm on Wednesday.

Police say the 67-year-old woman from Newnham was a pedestrian and has been seriously injured. She was taken to the Launceston General Hospital.

The 66-year-old driver of the vehicle has also been taken to hospital, with police saying his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Inspector Aleena Crack said the vehicle caused “significant damage” to the building.

“Crash investigation services are investigating the incident and will have more details as that unfolds,” she said.

“At this point in time, it’s too early to tell what the cause of the crash was.”

Earlier: A ute has crashed through the front of a Launceston food court, ploughing through tables and chairs before coming to rest in the middle of the venue.

Emergency services were called to Morty’s Food Court on Wellington Street around 12:30pm on Wednesday.

Police say the occupants of the vehicle are receiving medical treatment and that “no other injuries” have been reported at this stage.

A witness inside the food court at the time said it appeared a person was hit by the vehicle.

Photos from the scene show significant damage to the front of the building, with debris strewn across the dining area.

The cause of the crash remains unknown.
