A Sheffield resident has had a lucky escape after a car smashed through their home last night, tearing through multiple walls before coming to rest inside the property.

The black Ford Falcon crashed into the Station Street house in the northern Tasmanian town about 6:40pm on Wednesday, causing significant structural damage.

The resident was inside at the time but was not injured, Tasmania Police said.

The driver allegedly fled the scene on foot but was found a short time later.

A 24-year-old Sheffield man has been charged with reckless driving, failing to have proper control of a vehicle and failing to stop after a crash.

He is expected to appear in court at a later date.

Police have called on anyone who may have seen the Ford Falcon in the area before the crash to come forward.

“Anyone who witnessed the vehicle in the area prior to the crash is asked to contact Devonport Police on 131 444 and quote ESCAD 358-01042026,” police said.
