Police are asking drivers to avoid the area until further notice.

The blockages come as strong winds and heavy rain batter parts of the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds, with forecasters expecting them to ease later this afternoon.

Peak gusts of around 120km/h are still possible in exposed and elevated areas.

Significant wind gust observations up to 10:30am include 93km/h at Hobart, 111km/h at Cape Bruny, 152km/h at kunanyi/Mount Wellington and 132km/h at Scotts Peak Dam.
