A man and woman from the north-west have been charged with multiple child abuse and online exploitation offences following a joint police investigation.
The charges stem from a search warrant executed by the Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) at a home in February.
During the search, investigators allegedly discovered child exploitation material on the man’s phone involving a “young child known to both” himself and the woman.
The pair face serious charges including possession, production and distribution of child exploitation material, as well as indecent assault.
The woman faces additional charges of penetrative sexual abuse of a young person, with two counts listed against her.
Tasmania Police confirmed the investigation was conducted by JACET, a partnership between Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police specialising in combating child exploitation.
The male accused is scheduled to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on June, while the woman will face the Burnie Magistrates Court in July.
Authorities have placed the child in “alternative care” where they are receiving ongoing counselling and support services.
