The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has given the green light to a development application set to bring huge improvements to an elite Hobart private boys school.

The approved project includes partial demolition, construction of a new building, signage, front fencing, landscaping and associated works at The Hutchins School in Sandy Bay.

The development includes the construction of a state-of-the-art ‘Signature Building’ that will face Nelson Road, where the existing sports fields currently reside beneath the Senior School buildings.

The new $19 million building is set to serve multiple purposes, acting as a gathering place for the entire school community and providing indoor sports facilities.

Among its features are a versatile auditorium, a sports hall, offices, a gymnasium and amenities.

It is understood there won’t be any increase to classrooms or teaching spaces, nor will it lead to an increase in student or staff numbers.

The project has been partially funded by donations from parents and former students of the school, as part of Hutchins’ 2023 ‘Giving Day’.
