Home declared a crime scene, Claremont man in custody after infant hospitalised with serious head injuries

A man has been charged with allegedly causing grievous bodily harm to a baby who was admitted to the Royal Hobart Hospital with severe head injuries.

Hospital staff alerted police on Thursday after the infant was brought in for treatment the night before.

The baby remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Glenorchy Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) detectives have launched an investigation into the incident.

A property in Claremont has been cordoned off and declared a crime scene.

Police have confirmed the 24-year-old Claremont man accused is known to the infant.

He was taken into custody and will appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court this morning.
