A Hobart primary school has implemented strict security measures today following widespread social media warnings about potential youth riots in Glenorchy and surrounding suburbs.
Tasmania Police launched planned patrols across Glenorchy, Moonah and Claremont after viral posts claimed up to 200 young people were planning to “run through shopping centres and assault people and ransack shops”.
Windermere Primary School in Claremont say they have locked all outside doors and gates as a precautionary measure, with staff briefed on lockdown procedures.
“We are sharing this information to alleviate any concerns you may have. We have no reason to believe that the alleged anti-social behaviour will occur on or near our premises,” Principal Jarrod Williams told parents in a social media post.

The school suggested parents consider picking up their children rather than letting them use public transport or walk home.
One widely-shared Facebook post urged residents to avoid Northgate shopping centre, claiming “the riot squad will be on call but this will not guarantee your safety”.

Local bus service Calow’s Coaches have implemented route variations in response to the threats.
They said they put the measures in place “so we dont travel in the direct vicinity of specific areas mentioned by police to avoid.”
“All school pick up stops remain unchanged and students will be collected as normal,” the company assured parents.
Tasmania Police confirmed their increased presence is designed to maintain public safety in the affected areas.

“Police are committed to making sure our public spaces are safe for everyone to enjoy, and antisocial and illegal behaviour in our communities will not be tolerated,” a police spokesperson said.
Authorities encouraged people to report incidents through the police assistance line (131 444) or Triple-Zero for emergencies.
