Up to 60 jobs in Tasmania’s north are on the line with the impending closure of the Coles Garfield Street distribution centre.
The Launceston warehouse, which has been in operation since 1975, will shut its doors within the next three to five years.
The closure will pave the way for a new, fully automated $880 million facility in Truganina, Victoria, that will service both Victoria and Tasmania.
A Coles spokesperson said the transition would create a more efficient, sustainable and safer supply chain.
“The wellbeing of our impacted [distribution centre] team members in Launceston is our priority,” they said.
“We will provide the utmost support and care for our people throughout this transformation journey.”
They did not confirm the exact number of job losses.
The Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association (SDA) is working with Coles to ensure the best outcome for impacted workers.
