A woman has lost her licence for two years after crashing in a Burnie car park while more than five times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

The 36-year-old was stopped by police in Cooee on Tuesday afternoon after community members reported seeing her crash her vehicle in a South Burnie car park around midday.

She failed a roadside breath test and was taken to the Burnie police station, where she returned a reading of 0.269 – more than five times the legal limit of 0.05.

Sergeant Craig Dawkins said police were thankful for the community’s quick action, but disappointed that such behaviour continued on Tasmanian roads.

“Police thank the community for their quick action in reporting this incident,” he said.

“With serious and fatal crashes at concerning levels across the state, police are disappointed that behaviour like this continues to put lives at risk.”

As the busy summer period approaches, Sergeant Dawkins urged all drivers to think before they drive.

“As we head into the festive season, police urge all motorists to think twice before getting behind the wheel,” he said.

“It’s not worth the risk to yourself, to the community and to your licence.”

The woman will appear before the Burnie Magistrates Court at a later date.
