The memory of Constable Keith Smith, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this year, will live on through a new award celebrating the community spirit that defined his 25 years of service.
Tasmania Police has launched the Keith Smith Community Policing Award to honour officers who reflect the compassion and dedication that made Smith such a respected figure across the state’s north-west.
Smith’s death in June sent shockwaves through Tasmanian communities. The veteran officer was known for his gentle approach to policing and the care he showed for those he served.
“Keith was a well-respected and dedicated police officer who was committed to providing meaningful support to individuals while building lasting relationships founded on trust and service,” Acting Commissioner Jonathan Higgins said.

“These values of service and support defined his 25-year career.”
“We want to ensure the memory of Constable Keith Smith lives on and that the legacy of his community spirit continues to be recognised through the presentation of this annual award.”

The award aims to carry forward the qualities that made Smith stand out – his ability to connect with people in their most vulnerable moments and to build bridges between police and community.
Friends and colleagues remember a man who carried himself with quiet dignity, never seeking recognition but always ready to help.
Nominations for the inaugural award are open to both fellow officers and community members. Any serving Tasmania Police officer can be nominated, regardless of their role.
“We’re looking to recognise a serving police officer whose service to the community reflects the compassion, service and trust that Constable Smith embodied throughout his 25-year career,” Higgins said.

The first recipient will be announced at Tasmania Police’s medal ceremonies later this year, ensuring Smith’s legacy continues to inspire the next generation of officers.
