An indoor pool in Hobart’s northern suburbs that taught around 500 children how to swim each term has permanently closed.
Brighton Swim Centre announced its closure late on Sunday evening, saying “constant negative commentary” on social media was behind the decision.
“The decision to close has not been made lightly, as we are aware our community will no longer have a pool in your area and understand the impact and distress this will cause,” the centre shared.
The controversy is believed to have started when a mother alleged her five-year-old autistic son was excluded from lessons after other parents raised concerns.
“Another parent claimed her child “felt unsafe” around mine, yet couldn’t identify any behaviour to justify that feeling,” the woman wrote online.
She alleged the swim school arranged a meeting that “felt clearly focused on justifying removing my son” and then cancelled his enrolment via text message.
The family also claimed staff added a note to their account saying: “DO NOT RE-BOOK EVER.”
The centre’s management has denied the allegations, saying “private and respectful” conversations were held with the family involved.
“Not at any stage was any child refused lessons and we were of the understanding this family were happy with their child’s progress,” they said.
“During this matter, an internal administrative note was made in error by a staff member, which was quickly addressed once identified.”
Both sides also claimed to have sent emails to each other that went unanswered.
The dispute has since led to what the centre described as “health and safety concerns” for staff, with some choosing to leave the swimming industry altogether.
“We are going to miss seeing everyone, but will certainly cherish our wonderful memories,” the centre said.
“We wish you all the very best and hope you all have the opportunity to continue your swimming journey.”
All families with prepaid lessons will receive full refunds, management confirmed.
