Two waste depots in northern Tasmania will become cat-free zones from next Wednesday, as the local council steps up efforts to control feral populations that threaten wildlife and public health.
The Meander Valley Council has declared the Deloraine and Westbury waste depots as cat prohibited areas under the cat management act.
“This means cats found in these areas may be trapped, seized or detained by authorised persons,” the council said.
“In some cases, humane euthanasia may occur, in line with legislative requirement.”

The decision comes amid growing concerns about feral cat colonies breeding at both sites.
This has created what the council calls “a constant supply of feral cats for surrounding areas”.

The prohibited area covers the Deloraine depot on Tip Road and the Westbury facility on Cluan Road.
While the measure is not expected to impact residential areas, cat owners across the region are being urged to play their part in preventing the spread of feral populations.
“If you’re a cat owner, please ensure your pet is desexed, microchipped and safely contained at home,” the council said.
“These small actions help protect our native species and community wellbeing.”
