Controversial Battery Point Prince of Wales Hotel redevelopment gets council approval

A new mixed-use development will replace the historic Prince of Wales Hotel in Battery Point after receiving approval from the Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee.

The development application includes demolishing the existing red brick hotel to construct a three-storey complex featuring 13 visitor accommodation units, two townhouses, two commercial tenancies and a basement car park with 37 spaces.

The current Prince of Wales Hotel, built in 1967, replaced the original structure dating back to 1843.

The existing building contains eleven guest rooms, an 80-seat restaurant and a bar.

The approved plans include apartments, a landscaped courtyard, a bar and cafe, and retail space at the 55 Hampden Road and 43 South Street site.

The development faced opposition from local residents concerned about its scale and potential impacts on the historic precinct.

Residents expressed specific concerns about the underground car park excavation, fearing it could threaten nearby historic buildings.
