A coroner has found that a Tasmanian woman who was killed in an ATV crash last year was ‘travelling too fast’.

82-year-old Joy Hayes died after she lost control of the quad bike she was riding on Scenic Hill Road near Huonville on April 22, 2022.

In his newly published findings, Coroner Simon Cooper said Hayes died as a result of “massive injuries” sustained in the crash, which was caused due to “excessive speed on her part”.

Despite not wearing a helmet during the crash, Cooper said its absence did not play a role in her death.

The investigation ruled out road conditions, weather, the quad bike’s mechanical state, drugs, alcohol and others as contributing factors to the crash.

Cooper did not make any recommendations.
