Mayor Matthew Garwood said Dawkins had been a passionate and consistent advocate for progressive policies, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability, social equity and community wellbeing.

He thanked her for her contributions, both to the council and the wider community.

“Andrea has been one of the most consistent and courageous advocates for progressive change on our council,” Garwood said.

“Whether championing environmental initiatives, advocating for social justice or engaging directly with the community, Andrea has always brought compassion, integrity and a deep sense of purpose to the role.”

Garwood said Dawkins played a key role in shaping the city’s clean air strategy and strongly supported efforts to reduce waste, phase out single-use plastics and promote responsible pet ownership.

Alongside her work on council, Dawkins served as a member of the Tasmanian parliament between 2015 and 2018 and was inducted into the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women in 2023. She currently serves as CEO of RSPCA Tasmania.

“Her leadership has helped to embed sustainability and equity into the way we govern as a city and she leaves behind a legacy that will benefit our community for years to come,” Garwood said.

A recount will be held soon to fill the vacancy. Another recount is also expected for councillor George Razay, who was recently elected to state parliament.
