The Cradle Mountain Cable Car project is now effectively ‘dead’, after federal funding was withdrawn this week.
Construction costs for the project have soured to $190m, since the initial estimate of $60 million to be jointly pledged by the state and federal governments.

Greens Senator Nick McKim, a vocal opponent of the cable car development, expressed satisfaction at the news of the project’s demise.
“Tasmania’s wilderness is far too precious to be despoiled for profit, and surely now this horrendous project can be consigned to the dustbin where it belongs,” McKim said.
