Damaged stormwater infrastructure has been identified as the source of bacterial contamination that has forced the closure of part of a Burnie beach, the local council says.

Burnie City Council confirmed the pollution source at West Beach West after launching an investigation when elevated bacteria levels were detected on January 16.

The council says it is now working with relevant agencies to repair the damage.

Swimming remains off-limits in the western section of the beach, near the playground, until repairs are completed and water testing confirms it is safe.

Warning signs will remain in place while repairs are underway.

The council said bacterial levels can vary across different parts of a beach, depending on stormwater outlets, currents and wind conditions.

“As a result, closures and advisory signage are applied only to the affected sections rather than the entire beach, in line with our monitoring protocol and public health guidance,” the council said.

“Recent testing at West Beach East, in front of the surf club, shows the water quality there remains safe for swimming.”

Water sampling will continue fortnightly over summer, with the council promising updates as the situation develops.

“The signage will only be removed once the issue is resolved and tests show the water is safe for use,” the council said.
