A drunk driver from Penguin has lost their licence for 12 months after being caught more than four times over the limit following an evening of drinking.
The 66-year-old was stopped by police on the Bass Highway near Ulverstone just before 9pm on Saturday, where they recorded a breath alcohol reading of 0.203.
Acting Inspector Luke Negri said the stop was made thanks to a call from a “alert” community member who reported the driver for “dangerous” driving.
“This is a prime example of how our community plays a vital role in road safety,” Negri said.
“I [want] to sincerely thank the individual who contacted us. Your actions may well have saved lives.”
The driver was arrested, charged with drink driving and will appear in court at a later date.
Inspector Negri warned that police are increasing patrols in the lead-up to Christmas and New Year to deter dangerous behaviours.
“We are entering a busy and festive time of year, but let me be clear – if you drink and drive, you can expect to be caught,” he said.
“Our officers will be out in force … to ensure everyone gets home safely. This is just not about enforcement. It’s about protecting lives.”
