Danny Gibson’s 15-year stint on the Launceston City Council is officially over, after his resignation was accepted at today’s meeting.
Mayor Matthew Garwood confirmed the departure, telling councillors the CEO had received and accepted Gibson’s resignation.
“Over time, Councillor Gibson has been a really steady presence through plenty of changes here at council and fifteen years of service is a really long time,” Garwood said.
“On behalf of council, I want to thank Councillor Gibson for his dedication and contribution to the legacy that will be left behind here at the City of Launceston.”
Gibson was first elected in 2011 and went on to serve as both deputy mayor and mayor.

He stepped down as mayor in 2023, shortly after winning the role, when reports revealed a review of his registration to work with vulnerable people over alleged historical misconduct.
The allegations were never prosecuted in court and Gibson has maintained he always met his legal obligations.
He flagged his departure from council in October last year.
In a statement, Gibson said the timing was right to step away.
“With an election approaching, no requirement for a countback to fill my seat and time to reflect over recent weeks, now is the right time,” Gibson said.

“It has been a privilege to serve the Launceston community over the past 15 years.”
“I have given my full commitment to the role and worked to make a meaningful contribution, even in the face of significant challenges.”
Gibson said supporting residents, businesses and organisations across the city had been an honour.
“Launceston is an extraordinary city. It has been a privilege to serve – not only as an elected representative, but as part of this community,” he said.
