Dark Mofo has broken its own sales records after fans spent more than $3.8 million on tickets within five hours of them going on sale on Wednesday.
The winter arts festival sold over 45,000 tickets by 3pm, marking a 16% jump from opening day sales last year.
Almost two-thirds of purchases came from interstate visitors, proving the festival’s national appeal.
Popular shows sold out rapidly, with 28 performances reaching capacity on day one.

Art installations SOLAS and Êlêctron 45Cc L=20nm W20nm were snapped up despite organisers adding extra sessions.
The Nude Solstice Swim sold out for the first time on opening day, while all four sessions of Night Mass disappeared within hours.

Major acts including Ninajirachi, Acid Mothers Temple, Chat Pile, Kelly Moran and Danny Brown completely sold out.
Organisers said they scrambled to add extra sessions for Kelly Moran, Acid Mothers Temple, Sassy 009 and Chat Pile.
Waitlists have been established for Ninajirachi, Nina Utashiro and Miss Kaninna due to overwhelming demand.
“We’re staggered by the support we’ve seen for this year’s Dark Mofo so far,” artistic director Chris Twite said.

“Seeing people so eager to lock in tickets and embrace the cold here in Tasmania is tremendous.”
“Tickets are still available to some amazing shows, but you better be quick,” he said.
